Workplace Etiquette
As an existing Pilates professional, you will already be familiar with the standards of conduct expected within a professional Studio environment.
When completing Work Placement activities outside your usual workplace, you are also a guest within another professional environment and a representative of Pilates ITC. We ask that you approach these opportunities with respect for the Studio, its team, its Clients and the way they operate.
Always follow the policies and expectations of your host Studio. The following provides the minimum standard expected of Pilates ITC postgraduate Students.
Presentation
When attending a Studio for Teaching Practice or Observation, your presentation should make it clear that you are attending as a Pilates ITC Student while remaining consistent with the professional standards of the host Studio.
Unless otherwise advised, you are expected to:
wear your Pilates ITC Student t-shirt for Teaching Practice and Observation activities;
wear clean, professional and appropriate activewear;
wear appropriate footwear or grip socks in accordance with the Studio's requirements;
avoid strong fragrances that may affect the Client experience; and
follow any additional dress or presentation requirements of the host Studio.
Your Pilates ITC Student t-shirt is not required for Self-Mastery activities.
Where you are completing Teaching Practice within your usual workplace as part of your regular professional teaching, your normal workplace dress requirements apply.
Honour your commitments
Treat Work Placement bookings with the same professionalism you would any other professional commitment.
Arrive prepared and on time. If you are unable to attend a scheduled activity, contact the Studio, Instructor or Client as soon as possible and, wherever possible, provide at least 24 hours' notice.
Be mindful that Studios, Instructors and Clients may be making time or space available specifically to support your Work Placement.
Plan ahead + be flexible
Where you are relying on another Studio, Instructor or Client to complete a Work Placement activity, plan ahead.
Your preferred Studio, Instructor, class or time may not always be available, particularly when seeking opportunities to observe or practise late intermediate and advanced repertoire.
Be organised, communicate clearly and remain flexible when coordinating your activities.
Respect the Studio environment
Every Studio operates a little differently. Take the time to understand and follow the in-house policies, procedures and Studio care expectations of the environment you are using.
As a minimum:
use apparatus and equipment appropriately and in accordance with Studio requirements;
follow any instructions provided by the Studio team;
clean equipment after use;
return equipment and props to their appropriate place;
respect shared spaces and facilities;
maintain Client privacy and avoid disrupting scheduled sessions; and
leave the Studio in the same condition — or better — than you found it.
Be a good Studio guest
Work Placement can provide valuable opportunities to learn within professional environments beyond your own.
A simple principle applies: respect the people, respect the space and respect the way the Studio operates.
Professionalism is demonstrated not only through the way you teach, but also through the way you communicate, honour commitments and contribute to the environments in which you practise.
