About Advanced Observation
Advanced Observation is an opportunity to watch, analyse and reflect on Pilates teaching through the lens of your developing postgraduate knowledge.
At this level, observation goes beyond simply watching repertoire being delivered. You are encouraged to notice the choices being made by the Instructor — including programming, sequencing, cueing, movement adaptation, use of apparatus and the way late intermediate and advanced repertoire is applied within different teaching contexts.
Use your observation activities to deepen your understanding, challenge your thinking and consider how what you observe may inform your own professional practice.
How to complete Advanced Observation
You can complete up to 100% of your required Advanced Observation through the Pilates ITC Digital Studio, where you can access a range of late intermediate and advanced classes relevant to your postgraduate learning.
This provides a flexible way to complete your Observation requirements regardless of your location or access to advanced teaching environments.
In-Studio Advanced Observation
Where the opportunity is available to you, we also encourage you to undertake some of your Advanced Observation in a Studio environment.
Observing experienced Instructors in real-time can provide valuable insight into the nuances of teaching — including how an Instructor responds to the people in front of them, adapts their approach and makes decisions within a live teaching environment.
We recognise that access to late intermediate and advanced classes varies considerably, which is why in-Studio Observation is encouraged but not required.
Finding an in-Studio Observation opportunity
Late intermediate and advanced Observation opportunities may be available through selected Pilates ITC Instructor Training and Work Placement Studios, or through other appropriate Pilates Studios within your professional network.
Availability is not guaranteed, so you will need to contact the Studio directly to discuss suitable Observation opportunities and arrange any bookings.
Documenting your Advanced Observation
Record your completed Observation activities in your Work Placement Logbook as you progress rather than leaving your documentation until the end of your course.
Your Work Placement Logbook is available from the Assessment section of your LMS.
Verification of Observation hours
Your Observation hours must be recorded and verified in accordance with the requirements of your Work Placement Logbook.
Depending on how you complete the Observation activity, verification may be provided by:
your Lead Educator, where they are present for the activity;
your Lead Educator, where appropriate evidence of completion can be provided, such as a booking record or online class registration;
the Instructor delivering the class or session you observed; or
you, where the Observation was completed independently using an approved digital resource, such as the Pilates ITC Digital Studio.
Keep any supporting evidence required to verify your activities as you progress through your Work Placement.
